WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY - 2014

World Environment Day ('WED') is celebrated every year on June 5 to raise global awareness to take positive environmental action to protect nature and the planet Earth. It is run by the United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP).

HISTORY
It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 on the day that United Nations Conference on the Human Environment began. The first World Environment Day was celebrated in 1973. Since then it is hosted every year by a different city with a different theme.
World Environment Day falls in spring in the Northern Hemisphere and fall (rainy season) in the Southern Hemisphere, and midsummer in the Tropical regions.

The 2014 theme for World Environment Day will focus on 'Small Islands and Climate Change', the official slogan for the year 2014 is 'Raise Your Voice Not The Sea Level.

Niralampopanishad

Niralambopanishad

This is a fantastic version that deals with so many philosophical questions about the creator and the creation. It starts with the santhipata “Ohm purnamidam”. The first verse reads as follows “Ohm Namasivaya guravaee schidananda moorthee, Nishprapanchaya santhaya niralambhaya thejasee”. This is an oblation to the all powerful Shiva who is Sacidananda Moorty and the embodiment of peace.

The second stanza gives an idea about who a real Sanyasi is. He depends only on the paramatatwa (the ultimate principle); he discards the world and he attains moksha.

Then the author makes clear his commitments that he will describe about everything needed for the ignorant class to attain peace. Then follows a series of philosophical questions and the answers for that. There are no better questions for a student of life.

Following are the most important questions:

Ø  What is Brahma?
Ø  Who is God?
Ø  What is Life?
Ø  What is Prakrithi or nature?
Ø  Who is the Paramaatman?
Ø  Who is the real Brahman?
Ø  Who is Vishnu?
Ø  Who is Rudran?
Ø  Who is Indran?
Ø  Who is Yama?
Ø  Who is Surya?
Ø  Who is Moon?
Ø  Who is Asura?Who are the devils?
Ø  Who is man?
Ø  Who is a woman?
Ø  Who are animals?
Ø  What is caste?
Ø  What is Karma and Akarma?
Ø  What is njanam (knowledge)?
Ø  What is ignorance?
Ø  What is sugham (solace)?
Ø  What is dukham or sorrow?
Ø  What is heaven (swargam)?
Ø  What is hell?
Ø  What is bandham (relationship)?
Ø  What is moksham (salvation)?
Ø  Who is a disciple?
Ø  Who is a vidwan?
Ø  Who is a fool?
Ø  What is thapas?
Ø  What is paramapadam?
Ø  Who is a real sanyasi?

Then follows one emphatic statement. All these are part of Brahma or different dimensions of Brahma. Then we get some deep philosophical answers for the above questions. These are sublime answers that one can expect to get for such highly philosophical riddles in life.

For the first question who is ‘parabrahma’ we get the following answer: It is that force which is sublime and which is in the form of earth, water, air, fire and sky. It is unique and all powerful. It is the cause of all; without beginning and without end. It is pure and calm. It is Nirguna Brahma.

When the Parabrahma enters the universe and resides in all the beings it becomes Lord of all. The same chaithanya or essence can be named as Brahma, Vishnu, Indra, Sankara and so on. For the question what is jeeva or life, the answer is that it is ahambhavam(stoolabhava). One gets a feeling that he/ she is concrete and thinks about “my body”. This feeling is the reason for jeeva or the life. All different dimensions or forms are prakrithi or nature. It is the intellect of Brahma.

Then comes the question what is the Over Soul? That which is beyond the creations is Para Brahma. It resides in everything like sun, moon and all. There is nothing that is not God. (Once we accept this, we will have to come to the conclusion that there is no devil).

Sixth stanza deals with the question of caste and we get a beautiful version of the concept of caste. It is just imaginaryand it has nothing to do with skin, blood, meat or soul.

The answer to the question what is knowledge is given in the second part of stanza VI. The understanding that all objects visible and invisible are nothing but God is the ultimate knowledge. Ignorance (ajnjana) is the illusion that rope is the serpent. Just like that when one sees duality in God and Nature it is the pinnacle of ignorance. Actually Brahma, Deva, bird, animal, man, woman, are all the same.

What is sugham or solace? It is the realization of the nature of Paramaatma and the feeling of Sachidananda (fullness of peace and joy). Then we get a very interesting answer for the question what is heaven? Heaven is sajjana samagamam (company of sublime people). This is followed by the explanation of hell. It is the company of untruth and wicked people.

What is bondage? It is the feeling that “I am living”, “I am dying” etc. Possessiveness of father, mother, brother, wife, child, house, garden, temple etc is also a kind of bondage. The consideration of varnasrama dharma is also bondage. And we get a very interesting clarification that the very craving of moksha/salvation alone is also a kind of bondage. Craving for all ashtaiswarya (8 blessings) is also considered as bondage. All kinds of prayers with the aim of pleasing people and God for personal benefits will also be classified as bondage.

Then comes the explanation for moksha (eternal life). It is the absolute freedom from all aspects of joys and sorrows. It is total deliverance from all mamata (attachment) and bandhanam (bondage).

In the ensuing stanzas we get a series of definitions about different people and concepts.

1) Upasyan: One who is able to discern the ultimate essence of Brahma in every object and a real guru who can impart  such knowledge is called upasyan.

2) Disciple: One who  is able to dispel darkness of ignorance and becoming himself like Brahma will be termed as a real disciple.

3) Vidwan (Wise Person): One who is able to understand the real nature of the soul is a wise person.

4) Fool:  One who is an embodiment of pride will be called as a fool.

5) Asuuri: One who indulges in fasting and meditation with the intension of receiving blessings from Brahma, Vishnu & Maheswara belongs to this class.

6) Thapam (Contemplation): It is the process of comprehending the meaning of the dictum ‘Brahmasatyam Jagat mitdya (Brahma is the ultimate truth and the world is maya).

7) Paramapadam: It is different from jeeva (life), indriya and mind. It is the ultimate stage of deliverance.

Towards the end of this Upanishad we are again and again given a beautiful description about the qualities of a sage or an acetic. He frees himself from all kinds of pride and attachment. He is absolutely drawn to Brahma. He realizes the truth that “I am Brahma” and “All is Brahma”. There is nothing which is not the ultimate. He is termed as Muktan (free), Poojyan, Yogi, Paramahamsan, avadootan and Brahmanan.

The last part of this Upanishad makes a big claim that one who contemplates on this Upanishad with all seriousness will become as pure as fire and air. He will not have rebirth. He will attain eternal life.

The gorgeous Fruit Papaya

The gorgeous Fruit Papaya

Make sure that you have some as often as possible.

The gorgeous Fruit Papaya....
Papaya was the only studied food found to
halt breast cancer.

Scientists studied 14 plant foods commonly
consumed in Mexico to determine their
ability to halt breast cancer cell growth.
These included avocado, black
sapodilla, guava, mango, prickly pear
cactus (nopal), pineapple, grapes,
tomato, and papaya.

They also evaluated beta-carotene, total plant phenolics, and gallic acid
contents and antioxidant capacity. They found that only papaya had a significant
effect on stopping breast cancer cell growth.

Papaya is a store-house of cancer-fighting
lycopene.

The intense orangey-pink colour of papaya
means it is chock full of cancer fighting
carotenoids. Not only beta carotene, but
lycopene is found in abundance. The
construction of lycopene makes it highly
reactive towards oxygen and free radicals.

Scientists at the University of Illinois think this anti-oxidant activity contributes
to its effectiveness as a cancer fighting agent. Epidemiological studies have
indicated an inverse relationship between lycopene intake and prostate cancer
risk. They showed that oral lycopene is highly bio available, accumulates in
prostate tissue, and is localised in the nucleus of prostate epithelial cells.

In addition to antioxidant activity, other experiments have indicated that lycopene
induces cancer cell death, anti-metastatic activity, and the up-regulation of
protective enzymes. (The experiment report on cancer cells, Phase I and II studies have
established the safety of lycopene supplementation in done on October 8, 2008).

Prostate cancer was the subject of a
study in Australia that looked at 130 prostate cancer patients and 274 hospitalized
controls. The scientists found that men who consumed the most lycopene-rich
fruits and vegetables such as papaya were 82% less likely to have prostate
cancer. In this study, green tea also exerted a powerful anti-cancer effect.
When lycopene-rich foods were consumed with green tea, the combination was
even more effective, an outcome the researchers credited to their synergy. ( Asia
Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2007).

Isothiocyanates found in papaya restore the
cell cycle to eliminate cancer.

Organo-sulphur compounds called isothiocyanates
are found in papaya. In animal experiments,
isothiocyanates protected against cancers of the
breast, lung, colon, pancreas, prostate, as well as
leukaemia, and they have the potential to prevent
cancer in humans. Isothiocyanates have shown
themselves capable of inhibiting both the
formation and development of cancer cells
through multiple pathways and mechanisms.
(International Journal of Oncology, October, 2008).

Types of isothiocyate fruit and vegetable. Researchers in Japan - clarified the mechanisms of action in a type of
isothiocyanate found in papaya known as BITC, which underlies the
relationship between cell cycle regulation and appropriate cell death.
When cancerous cells die on schedule, they are no longer a problem.

The researchers established that BITC exerted cancer cell killing effects that were
greater in the proliferating cells than in the quiescent cells. Cancer cells that are
proliferating are much more dangerous than cancer cells that are in a state of
dormancy. (Forum of Nutrition, 2009).

Enzymes (Vinegar) from papaya digest proteins
including those that protect tumours.

The fruit and other parts of the papaya tree, also known
as the paw paw tree, contain papain and
chymopapain, powerful proteolytic enzymes that
facilitate chemical reactions in the body.

They promote digestion by helping to break down
proteins from food into amino acids that can be
recombined to produce protein useable by humans.

Proteolytic enzymes protect the body from
inflammation and help heal burns. They do a good job of digesting
unwanted scar tissue both on the skin and under its surface.

Being a proteolytic enzyme, papain is able to destroy intestinal parasites, which
are composed mostly of protein. To rid the body of intestinal parasites, half a
cup of papaya juice can be alternated each hour for twelve consecutive
hours with the same amount of cucumber or green bean juice.

Research has shown that the physical and mental health of people is highly
dependent on their ability to produce proteins they can use effectively.

However, as people age, they produce less of
the enzymes needed to effectively digest
proteins from food and free needed amino acids.
They are left with excessive amounts of
undigested protein which can lead to overgrowth
of unwanted bacteria in the intestinal tract,
and a lack of available amino acids.

Eating papaya after a meal promotes
digestion, and helps prevent bloating, gas
production, and indigestion. It is quite helpful
after antibiotic use to replenish friendly intestinal
bacteria that were the casualties in the war
against the unwanted bacteria. When the
intestinal tract is well populated with friendly
bacteria, the immune system is strengthened,
and can protect better against flu and
cancer.

Papaya contains fibrin, another useful compound
not readily found in the plant kingdom.

Fibrin reduces the risk of blood clots and improves the quality of blood
cells, optimising the ability of blood to flow through the circulatory
system. Fibrin is also important in prevention strokes.

Proteolytic enzymes containing fibrin are a good idea for long plane rides to
minimize the potential of blood clots in the legs. People who sit at a desk all day
might want to use proteolytic enzymes too. Proteolytic enzymes are able to digest
and destroy the defence shields of viruses, tumours, allergens, yeasts,
and various forms of fungus.

Once the shield is destroyed, tumours and invading organisms are extremely
vulnerable and easily taken care of by the immune system. Undigested proteins
can penetrate the gut and wind up in the bloodstream where they are treated by
the immune system as invaders. If too many undigested proteins are floating
around, the immune system becomes overburdened and unable to attend
to the other tasks it was meant to do. Proteolytic enzymes can digest
these rogue proteins, freeing up the immune system.

Let's ensure a slice of papaya every day in our diet. Papaya juice will be great.

Have a great day.....along with a slice of papaya.
