Mukthikopanishad – Part II

Hanuman continues his discourse with Sri Rama. He asked about the means of attaining moksha. Some people say that they can derive salvation just by reciting the name of Sri Rama. Others are of the opinion that if they chant Tharakamantra in Kasi they will get Moksha. There are others who believe that moksha can be attained by Sankya yoga and Bhakthi yoga. There are also many sages who are of the opinion that contemplating on the meaning of Vedas will be enough for the same.

Sages have stated that there are four phases for salvation namely salokya, sameepya, saroopya and sayugya mukthi. Salokya mukthi means gaining entry into Vishnu loka (Gods Kingdom). If one can be seated near Vishnu it can be termed as sameepya mukthi. At the stage of sarupya mukthi one will be continuously contemplating the image of God. The process of immerging with God can be termed as sayugya mukthi. If the jeevathma merges with the Parabrahma that state can be described as Kaivalya mukthi. True Devotees raise up to these levels one by one by their total dedication and surrender.

When Hanuman expresses these thoughts Sri Rama commented as follows:

“Kaivalyamukthi  rekhaiva  paramaarthika rupini
Duraachara radho vaapimannaama bhajanat kape…..
Punaraavritthi rahitaam mukthim
Praapnoothi maanavaha:
Yathra puthraapi vaa kashyam maranee sa maheswara:.”

[Actually there is only the Kaivalya mukthi. Even if one is fond of evil rituals, just by reciting my name, he can achieve salokya mukthi. One who recites my Tharaka mantra at Kashi during his death will be eligible for moksha. One who dies where ever in Kashi will attain salvation.]
