Proverbs


A proverb is a simple and concrete saying popularly known and repeated, that expresses a truth based on common sense or the practical experience of humanity. Proverbs are very important and they say a lot in few words. They are like Ocean in a pot. Proverbs are the gems of wisdom. They are coined in order to impart practical knowledge to us. It is a great truth with lots of experience and profound thinking. It is the mixture of wisdom & philosophy. It does not argue over a point or explain anything; it just tells us a great truth in the most significant way.

Some Proverbs:

  • Aana Vayil Ambazhanga. - Too small an amount for a very large need.



  • Araante ammakku pranthu pitichaal kaanaan nalla chellu. - It is always enjoyable to make fun of other's tragedy till it actually hits you.



  • Chakkinu Vechatu Kokkinu Kondu. - Trap made for some one, but got trapped someone else.



  • kupayil kalanjalum, alannu kalayanam. - Even waste should be measured and discarded.



  • Moothavar chollum muthu nellikka; aadhyam kaykkum pinne madhurikkum.- Obey what the elders tell you, at first they may sound sour, later it will be sweet. 



  • Minnunnathellaam ponnalla. - All that glitters is not gold.



  • Mulla poompodi eetu kidakkum kallinum undaam saurabhyam. - Our behavior also depends on the company that we have.

  • Nadukadalil chennalum naaya nakkiye kudikku. - You do what you are, hence you are what you do. 

  • Othu pidichal malayum porum, Othillenkil Malannu Veezhum - With combined effort, even a mountain can be moved. With differences, you would fall flat.

  • Payyethinnal panayum thinnam. - Take your time, you can complete anything.

  • velukkaan thechathu paandaayi. - Overdoing something will result in an unwanted consequence.
